Al 3+ - Ca2+ INTERACTION IN PLANTS GROWING IN ACID SOILS: AL-PHYTOTOXICITY RESPONSE TO CALCAREOUS AMENDMENTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Meriño-Gergichevich,C; Alberdi,M; Ivanov,A.G; Reyes-Diaz,M.
High aluminum (Al) concentrations as Al3+ represent an important growth and yield limiting factor for crops in acid soils (pH ≤5.5). The most recognized effect of Al-toxicity in plants is observed in roots. However, damages in the upper parts (including stem, leaves and fruits) may also be present. In addition, Al-toxicity triggers an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress that can damage the roots and chloroplasts, decreasing normal functioning of photo synthetic parameters. Al-toxicity may also increase or inhibit antioxidant activities, which are responsible to scavenge ROS. As result of the negative effects of toxic Al, root metabolic processes, such as water and nutrient absorption, are disturbed with a...

Aluminum induces lipid peroxidation and aggregation of human blood platelets BJMBR
Aluminum (Al3+) intoxication is thought to play a major role in the development of Alzheimer's disease and in certain pathologic manifestations arising from long-term hemodialysis. Although the metal does not present redox capacity, it can stimulate tissue lipid peroxidation in animal models. Furthermore, in vitro studies have revealed that the fluoroaluminate complex induces diacylglycerol formation, 43-kDa protein phosphorylation and aggregation. Based on these observations, we postulated that Al3+-induced blood platelet aggregation was mediated by lipid peroxidation. Using chemiluminescence (CL) of luminol as an index of total lipid peroxidation capacity, we established a correlation between lipid peroxidation capacity and platelet aggregation. Al3+...

Antioxidant system response induced by aluminum in two rice cultivars Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ribeiro,Cleberson; Cambraia,José; Peixoto,Paulo Henrique Pereira; Fonseca Júnior,Élcio Meira da.
The antioxidant defense system response was evaluated in two rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.), Fernandes (CNA-1158) and Maravilha (CNA-6843-1), treated with toxic levels of aluminum. After exposure to aluminum we determined plant growth, H2O2 and O2•- contents, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes activities and ascorbate and dehydroascorbate contents. Al predominantly accumulated in roots of both cultivars but it reduced root and shoot growth only in the Maravilha cultivar. Treatment with aluminum resulted in a reduction of 84 and 60% in the levels of H2O2 in the roots of the cultivars Maravilha and Fernandes, respectively, and of 26% in the levels of O2•- only in the roots of Fernandes cultivar. Increased lipid peroxidation was observed only in the...

Determination of serum aluminum, platelet aggregation and lipid peroxidation in hemodialyzed patients BJMBR
Neiva,T.J.C.; Benedetti,A.L.; Tanaka,S.M.C.N.; Santos,J.I.; D'Amico,E.A..
Aluminum (Al3+) overload is frequently associated with lipid peroxidation and neurological disorders. Aluminum accumulation is also reported to be related to renal impairment, anemia and other clinical complications in hemodialysis patients. The aim of the present study was to determine the degree of lipid peroxidation, platelet aggregation and serum aluminum in patients receiving regular hemodialytic treatment. The level of plasma lipid peroxidation was evaluated on the basis of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Mean platelet peroxidation in patients undergoing hemodialysis was significantly higher than in normal controls (2.7 ± 0.03 vs 1.8 ± 0.06 nmol/l, P<0.05). Platelet aggregation and serum aluminum levels were determined by a...

Ecological strategies of Al-accumulating and non-accumulating functional groups from the cerrado sensu stricto Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Marcelo C. de; Bueno,Paula C.P.; Morellato,Leonor P.C.; Habermann,Gustavo.
The cerrado's flora comprises aluminum-(Al) accumulating and non-accumulating plants, which coexist on acidic and Al-rich soils with low fertility. Despite their existence, the ecological importance or biological strategies of these functional groups have been little explored. We evaluated the leaf flushing patterns of both groups throughout a year; leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Al, total flavonoids and polyphenols; as well as the specific leaf area (SLA) on young and mature leaves within and between the groups. In Al-accumulating plants, leaf flushed throughout the year, mainly in May and September; for non-accumulating plants, leaf flushing peaked at the dry-wet seasons transition. However, these behaviors could not be associated with...

Estimating gypsum equirement under no-till based on machine learning technique Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Guimarães,Alaine Margarete; Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Silva,Karine Sato da; Rocha,José Carlos Ferreira da.
Chemical stratification occurs under no-till systems, including pH, considering that higher levels are formed from the soil surface towards the deeper layers. The subsoil acidity is a limiting factor of the yield. Gypsum has been suggested when subsoil acidity limits the crops root growth, i.e., when the calcium (Ca) level is low and/or the aluminum (Al) level is toxic in the subsoil layers. However, there are doubts about the more efficient methods to estimate the gypsum requirement. This study was carried out to develop numerical models to estimate the gypsum requirement in soils under no-till system by the use of Machine Learning techniques. Computational analyses of the dataset were made applying the M5'Rules algorithm, based on regression models. The...

Gypsum application, soil fertility and cotton root growth Bragantia
Pivetta,Laércio Augusto; Castoldi,Gustavo; Pivetta,Laerte Gustavo; Maia,Suelen Cristina Mendonça; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
ABSTRACT Since there is no consensus on phosphogypsum (PG) rates to be used in agriculture, a better understanding of its effects on the soil solution is needed. Cotton root growth was evaluated as related to Al and Ca activity in soil solution affected by PG. The experiment was carried out in rhizotrons filled with30∙dm–3 of soil. PG rates were estimated by multiplying the soil clay content by 0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0 and 12.0, and it was mixed to the sub-soil.In the upper soil layer, limestone was applied. After 90 days, samples were taken for analysis, and cotton was planted. After27 days, plants were harvested. PG increased soil pH and decreased Al content and activity. Without PG, dissolved organic carbon concentration was high in the soil solution, which...

Influence of different levels of aluminum on the development of citrus rootstock swingle citrumelo (Citrus paradisi mcf. x Poncirus trifoliata raf.) in nutrient solution BABT
Santos,Carlos Henrique dos; Grassi Filho,Hélio; Rodrigues,João Domingos; Pinho,Sheila Zambello de.
This work aimed at evaluating the influence of different levels of aluminum on the physiological parameters of the citrus rootstock Swingle Citrumelo in hydroponic solution. The experiment was carried out with a completely randomized design with three replications, subdivided in several lots. The levels of aluminum used were: 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5 and 30 mg L-1 in form of AlCl3.6H2O in nutrient solution. Following physiological parameters were evaluated: specific and relative foliar area, relative foliar mass, and the ratio of aerial part dry matter/root system dry matter. The results showed that aluminum did not influence the parameters evaluated except the specific foliar area, which decreased starting at the 7.5 mg L-1 level.

Localization and compartmentation of Al in the leaves and roots of tea plants Phyton
Hajiboland,R; Poschenrieder,C.
Under acid soil conditions, solubility of aluminum (Al) increases leading to toxicity for plants. Al accumulator species such as tea, however, accumulate high levels of Al in tissues without toxicity symptoms. In this work, Al localization and compartmentation were studied in tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] grown hydroponically at 0 or 100 µM Al for eight weeks. Plant dry matter production was significantly higher in the presence of Al and accumulated up to 1.21 and 6.18 mg Al/g DW in the leaves and roots, respectively. About 40-50% of Al was partitioned into cell wall (CW)-bound fraction without any difference among leaves of different age and roots. A significant increase of the soluble phenolics fraction by Al was observed in both leaves and...

Reduction of exchangeable calcium and magnesium in soil with increasing pH BABT
Miyazawa,Mário; Pavan,Marcos A.; Ziglio,Cláudio O.; Franchini,Júlio C..
A laboratory study was conducted with soil samples and synthetic solutions to investigate possible mechanisms related with reduction in KCl exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Increasing soil pH over 5.3 with CaCO3 added to the soil and with NaOH solution added to soil/KCl suspension increased adsorptions of Ca and Mg. The reduction of Mg was greater than Ca and was related to the concentration of soil exchangeable Al. The decreases of soluble Ca and Mg following addition of Al in synthetic solution were at pH > 7.5. The isomorphic coprecipitation reaction with Al compounds may be the most possible mechanism responsible for the decrease of exchangeable Ca and Mg with increasing pH. Possible chemical reactions are presented.

Shoot and root responses of Trifolium vesiculosum to boron fertilization in an acidic Brazilian soil BABT
Favaretto,Nerilde; Motta,Antônio Carlos Vargas; Barcik,Cristina; Lustosa,Sebastião Brasil Campos; Comin,Jucinei José.
To analyze the influence of boron fertilization on shoot and root growth of Trifolium vesiculosum (arrowleaf clover), an acid soil profile (60 cm depth with 67% Al saturation) was recreated in a column (three layers of 20 cm each). Lime and fertilizer (P and K) were incorporated into the top 20 cm. The treatments consisted of six boron rates where boric acid was mixed throughout the profile. Addition of boron to soil with low pH and high Al increased the root and shoot growth, independent of the rate applied. Boron inhibited Al toxicity, but no effect was observed in the root length when Al was not present in the soil. It was also observed that there was more root growth below the plow layer (0-20 cm,) suggesting better root distribution in the soil...

Surface application of lime ameliorates subsoil acidity and improves root growth and yield of wheat in an acid soil under no-till system Scientia Agricola
Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Corrêa,José Cristovão Leal; Churka,Susana; Barth,Gabriel; Garbuio,Fernando José.
Crop root growth and grain yield can be affected by chemical modifications in the soil profile due to surface lime application. A field trial was carried out on a loamy dystrophic Typic Hapludox at Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, Brazil, to evaluate root growth and grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. CD 104, moderately susceptible to Al), about 10 years after surface liming (0, 2, 4, and 6 Mg ha-1) and three years after surface re-liming (0 and 3 Mg ha-1), in a long-term no-till cultivation system. Soil acidity limited wheat root growth and yield severely, probably as a result of extended water deficits during the vegetative stage. Surface liming caused increases up to 66% in the root growth (0-60 cm) and up to 140% in the grain yield. Root...

Temporal dynamics of the response to Al stress in Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Alcântara,Berenice K. de; Pizzaia,Daniel; Piotto,Fernando A.; Borgo,Lucélia; Brondani,Gilvano E.; Azevedo,Ricardo A..
Lipid peroxidation and root elongation of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis were studied under stress conditions in response to aluminum (Al), a metal known to limit agricultural productivity in acidic soils primarily due to reduced root elongation. In Brazil, the Grancam 1277 hybrid (E. grandis × E. camaldulensis) has been planted in the "Cerrado", a region of the country with a wide occurrence of acidic soils. The present study demonstrated that the hybrid exhibited root growth reduction and increased levels of lipid peroxidation after 24h of treatment with 100 µM of Al, which was followed by a reduction in lipid peroxidation levels and the recovery of root elongation after 48h of Al exposure, suggesting a rapid response to the early...

Tiller emission and dry mass accumulation of wheat cultivars under stress Scientia Agricola
Almeida,Milton Luiz de; Sangoi,Luís; Merotto Jr.,Aldo; Alves,Antônio Carlos; Nava,Itamar Cristiano; Knopp,Armando Cristiano.
Tillers are important structures for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) because they contribute to increase the number of spikes per area, enhancing grain yield. Stresses during plants early growth have a sizable effect on tiller production. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of stresses induced by unevenness in sowing depth, defoliation and differences in soil pH on tiller emission and dry mass accumulation of wheat cultivars. The experiments were carried out in Lages, Southern Brazil, during the winter growing seasons of 2000 and 2001. They were performed in square boxes, under natural conditions of radiation and irrigation. In the first experiment, five types of sowing depths were tested to simulate different systems of unevenness in...

Zinc in the prevention of Fe2initiated lipid and protein oxidation Biol. Res.
ZAGO,M. PAOLA; VERSTRAETEN,SANDRA V.; OTEIZA,PATRICIA I..
In the present study we characterized the capacity of zinc to protect lipids and proteins from Fe2+-initiated oxidative damage. The effects of zinc on lipid oxidation were investigated in liposomes composed of brain phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylserine (PS) at a molar relationship of 60:40 (PC:PS, 60:40). Lipid oxidation was evaluated as the oxidation of cis-parinaric acid or as the formation of 2-thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). Zinc protected liposomes from Fe2+ (2.5-50 muM)-supported lipid oxidation. However, zinc (50 muM) did not prevent the oxidative inactivation of glutamine synthelase and glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase when rat brain superntants were oxidized in the presence of 5 muM Fe2+ and 0.5 mM H2O2 .We also...
